Continued Studies at Museum School Boston, affiliated with Boston Fine Arts Museum
and DeCordova Museum School, studied painting there with Elizabeth Ahern who was mentored by Helen Frankenthaler, foundational artist in Abstract Expressionism
Statement of the artist:
"I grew up in Billings, MT. The home of my childhood nestled against the wind and water carved prehistoric seabed cliffs of the Rims which were my childhood playground.
I spent 100's of hours climbing these cliffs, which, in turn, fueled my imagination and instilled a deep love of shape, color, dramatic space, solitude and reflection, and an intuitive sense of the prehistory of Montana. I feel very small in the grand scope of things when I imagine time in terms of prehistory, and it links me to a greater whole of life that feels appropriate and satisfying.
Coming back into the West and facing the likes of ghosts such as Charlie Russell, Remington, Will James and the stature of present artists such as Deborah Butterfield with her contemporary sculptural poetry, one can feel trepidation about a subject matter which is, by record, one of the oldest subject matters known. But the horse, as subject matter, seems to have chosen me. I was obsessed with them from youngest age, as soon as I could make conscious marks on paper and have continued throughout my life to be fascinated with them. I believe humans have a profound bond with them that defies the ages and is even more potent now, being freed from necessity borne from work or defense.
When I paint, draw, or spend time with horses, I am joining in a conversation between humans and horses that began around 30,000 years ago. The heart of my work is exploring this conversation."
