Artist Statement
Every location that I paint is significant to me. These are all places that I know so well they are etched in my consciousness. I live in a region that presents diverse landscapes and offers my imagination infinite ways to translate them into a range of keys or themes. That being said, the painting is never just about a location per se, but that location becomes a tool that I use to fulfill a particular series that I am working on at that time.
I am an avid student of early 20th century American landscape painters. My strongest influences are Tryon, Twachtman and Whistler and their sensitive, delicate high key palettes. I work in series of pieces with a common thread of subject matter, palette themes or value keys. Working in this manner allows me to explore the landscape and push color and space beyond traditional representation. My current work develops a sense of space and place using limited tools of color and value in straightforward compositions, visually articulating an emotional connection to my environment.
