“Scouting For New Range” is an exceptionally fine example of a late 1890’s watercolor by Charles M. Russell. In the foreground of a sage scrub Montana landscape ride three finely rendered cowboys on horseback along with a pack horse. Three additional riders approach in the background. The principal figure, riding a bay horse with a blaze face is clad in classic period gear, wooly chaps, six shooter and holster, leather gauntlets, a brightly patterned red bandana and calmly holding a cigarette in his left hand. All are focused on the task at hand.
